The oldest koi variety

Asagi predates the Gosanke by decades. Every modern variety traces genetics back to Asagi, which is why serious collectors keep at least one in their pond. The variety features a light blue net-pattern (fukurin) across the back with a clean red band along the belly, cheeks, and pectoral fins (motoaka).

Skin quality above all

Because Asagi's pattern is entirely a scale-net, judges evaluate the crispness and uniformity of the reticulation. A soft, even blue with cleanly-outlined scales beats a darker, muddier fish every time. The head should be pale blue-white and free of black spots.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Asagi and Shusui?+

Shusui is essentially a scaleless (Doitsu) Asagi. Same blue-and-red palette, but a smooth body with a single row of large scales along the dorsal line.

Do Asagi grow large?+

Very. Well-bred Asagi are among the biggest koi in a pond, routinely reaching 70-80 cm in maturity.
