Shusui was developed in 1910 by crossing Asagi with a German scaleless (Doitsu) carp. The result: an Asagi palette on a mirror-smooth body, with one clean row of large blue scales tracing the spine.
The dorsal scale row should be even and unbroken, with each scale the same deep indigo. The head is a pale sky-blue, free of blemish. Motoaka (red on cheeks and pectorals) should be crisp against the smooth white skin.

Slightly. Doitsu koi have thinner skin and can sunburn in shallow ponds; provide shade and keep water quality stable.
Like Asagi, Shusui grow large — 70 cm+ is common in mature fish from strong bloodlines.
