The three Utsuri

Utsurimono comes in three forms. Shiro Utsuri is a black fish with white — clean, high-contrast, and the most popular Utsuri today. Hi Utsuri carries fiery red on black. Ki Utsuri, the original form, carries a bright yellow — increasingly rare and highly prized.

What sets Utsuri apart from Showa

Utsuri and Showa share sumi genetics; the difference is that Utsuri only carries two colours. That simplicity puts pressure on the sumi to be exceptional — deep, glossy, and wrapping (maki-zumi) rather than sitting on the surface. Hachiware sumi across the head and motoguro on the pectorals are as important on an Utsuri as on a Showa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shiro Utsuri or Showa better?+

Neither is objectively better — they're judged on their own criteria. A high-grade Shiro Utsuri stands or falls on sumi quality and shiroji brightness alone, which makes flaws harder to hide than on a three-colour Showa.

Why does Hi Utsuri fade?+

Hi on an Utsuri sits on a sumi-based skin and can lose intensity if diet, water quality, or lighting is poor. High-quality colour-enhancing food and stable water chemistry preserve the red.
