Protect Your Koi: Defending Against Raccoons, Herons & Hawks

Beautiful koi in a shallow backyard pond are basically a buffet sign for wildlife. Even in suburban Markham, herons fly in from miles away and raccoons map your yard within a week. Here's the defense playbook we recommend.

Depth is your best friend. A pond with a 4–6 foot deep section gives koi a safe zone where herons literally can't reach. Most successful predator strikes happen in shallow ponds with no escape.

Add steep, vertical sides at the edge. Gradually-sloped shorelines invite raccoons to wade in. Vertical walls of 18 inches+ make the edge inaccessible.

Pond netting. A taut black net stretched over the pond is the single most effective deterrent. Modern netting is nearly invisible once installed and stops herons cold.

Decoy herons (with caveats). A plastic heron decoy can deter young birds because herons are territorial — but move it weekly. Mature birds learn quickly and ignore stationary fakes.

Motion-activated sprinklers. Brands like Scarecrow trigger a sharp burst of water on any movement. Surprisingly effective against raccoons, herons, and curious neighborhood cats.

Hiding spots underwater. A pond cave, a koi tunnel, or an undercut ledge gives koi somewhere to retreat. Even a piece of large PVC tubing at the bottom helps.

Lights and motion at night. Raccoons are nocturnal. A simple motion-triggered porch light reduces nighttime visits dramatically.
